India Requirements – Calorie Count on Menus & Food Labeling
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made it compulsory for food establishments across India to display calorie information into their menus as it is a crucial step towards helping citizens make informed choices when ordering or consuming food.
What are the consequences of not complying as per FSSAI?
The FSSAI has inspected over 500 food businesses across India, 71 of them were not compliant and said they would make the necessary changes.
Those that would fail to comply would be at risk of having their establishment shut down, 16 out of the 500 across India have failed to comply/not responded and therefore their food business is shut down.
Which food establishments need to comply?
